Calling all writers! Draft a western — don’t forget your cowboy boots.
Length – 6k to 8k; can be fewer but no more than 8k please.
Submissions DEADLINE UPDATE: I’d like to have all submissions in by 15-Sep so the anthology can be completed and out the end of 2014.
A Western has different meanings to different people but is most commonly thought of as stories with Cowboys from the American frontier during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. What I would like to create is a set of stories that updates the genre, whether through smash-ups with things like sci-fi or simply by telling an old story in a new way. Firefly and Django Unchained come to mind here.
There are a few key points I am looking for no matter how you put your story together:
Desolate landscape/setting. Deep space counts; alien planets count; Canadian wilderness counts; anything will work as long as there is isolation (and probably dirt!)
Wandering protag. Similar to a Ronin; doesn’t have to be a lone character but the story should have a small number of central characters who follow their own morals/code of ethics
A struggle to survive/lack of creature comforts. You can have fancy and wealthy but please also include a struggle to stay alive in the desolate landscape with those thousand dollar elephant boots.
I look forward to smash-ups and genre bending. Horror on the High Planes would make an excellent title for someone.
